The residents of Nazareth House greatly enjoyed assembling colorful paper flower arrangements courtesy of Lisa W. They appreciated the beauty of the flowers, and many gifted their creations to other residents for the July 4th holiday. Thanks very much Lisa!
Even amid the difficulties of our coronavirus shelter at home situation, a resident took the time to express words of appreciation for living here at Nazareth House. She wrote to the staff:
“Thank you for all you do, every day, in every way, to turn this vision into the reality of living in this Garden of Eden, Nazareth House. I have been here for only five months, and it is already home. The grounds are beautiful, with flowers and fountains – wonderful places for quiet prayer and meditation. The food is excellent…. The people are sweet – so good, so holy, in many ways so much fun to be with. It’s almost as if the aging process has acted on these dear people with some sort of magic, where each wrinkle and gray hair has enhanced them with a quality that “young and beautiful” doesn’t possess. It’s the same way the inevitable natural process of growing old produces a ripe and rosy, delicious peach, a succulent wheel of cheese, a mellow glass of wine… and lovely, loving, lively, happy old folks!”
Thank you to all families and friends who have supported Nazareth House residents and staff these past few weeks during our coronavirus shelter at home. Your kind words and donations of materials and supplies are appreciated. The Easter Candy, Italian truffles and biscuits, the personal care items, magazines, and more have been great treats for the residents. These handmade masks were donated to Nazareth House by a resident ‘s daughter…. Thank you Barbara, Helen, Fr. Tom, Tom, Jo, Janet, Roger, Joan, Mia, Julianna, Joyce, Patty, Teresa, Yvette, the Nazareth House Auxiliary, and everyone else!
We are taking every precaution we can to keep our residents and staff healthy. No visitors, very limited gatherings, social distancing in the dining rooms, sanitizing… this is the new reality for now. Your mail, emails, prayers, and positive wishes are most appreciated!
Residents enjoyed crafting leprechauns in a recent art session at Nazareth House. Practicing fine motor control and expressing creativity made for a fun afternoon!

Welcome (back) to Sister Rose Hoye! Sister Rose served for 12 years on the Leadership Team in London for the Congregation of the Sisters of Nazareth, but is back in California now as the American Superior for the 4 California houses (San Rafael, Fresno, Los Angeles, San Diego) and the school (San Diego). She will work closely with Barbara Anne Crowley, our Area CEO, in securing and continuing the mission and ministries of the Sisters of Nazareth in America. Sister Rose was at Nazareth House San Rafael from 2000-2006. During that time, the Auxiliary, Sisters and staff raised funds for our bocce Court, gazebo, and front lawn paths. She was part of the last renovation of the Care Center, carpeting and painting of the residential wings, installation of new dining furniture, and the painting of the murals.
She remembers fondly the outings to Deer Park Villa, the July 4 and Labor Day picnics, and the joy of everyday life in San Rafael. “This house is one of the happiest places I lived. It’s the sense of home here – I love the people and the community, and I always feel grounded here.” We hope to see her regularly here in San Rafael, gracing us with her presence and wisdom, teaching and practicing Servant Leadership, and helping to guide our 2019-2020 house renovations.
Pumpkins, zucchini, tomatoes and Sister Cecilia’s Famous Peppers can all be found among the roses in our sunny gardens. Even watermelon made an appearance this summer!
