A hydrologic model, calibrated using only streamflow data, can produce acceptable streamflow simulation at the watershed outlet yet unrealistic representations of water balance across the landscape. Recent studies have demonstrated the potential of multi-objective calibration using remotely sensed evapotranspiration ET and gaged streamflow data to spatially improve the water balance. To address these limitations, we assessed how a spatially explicit, distributed calibration approach that uses 1 remotely sensed ET data from the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer MODIS and 2 frequently overlooked biophysical parameters can improve the overall predictability of two key components of the water balance: streamflow and ET at different locations throughout the watershed.

Journal of Hydroinformatics 1 January ; 23 1 : 1— Calibration and uncertainty analysis of a complex, over-parameterized environmental model such as the Soil and Water Assessment Tool SWAT requires thousands of simulation runs and multiple calibration iterations. A parallel calibration system is thus desired that can be deployed on cloud-based architectures for reducing calibration runtime. The runtime reduction is more pronounced for more complex and computationally intensive models. However, the reported runtime efficiency is significantly higher for single node systems. LCC-SWAT is a flexible calibration system and other optimization algorithms and asynchronous parallelization strategies can be added to it in future. Watershed models are widely used by water resources planners and managers in the decision-making process Devia et al.

Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT)

Abstract Modern mathematical models have been developed for studying the complex hydrological processes of a watershed and their direct relation to weather, topography, geology and land use. It aims to simulate the stream flow, establish the water balance and estimate the monthly volume inflow to Simly Dam in order to help the managers to plan and handle this important reservoir. The ArcSWAT interface implemented in the ArcGIS software was used to delineate the study area and its sub-components, combine the data layers and edit the model database. The model was calibrated from to and evaluated from to

SWAT: Model Use, Calibration, and Validation

SWAT was developed to predict the impact of land management practice on water, sediment and agricultural chemical yields in large complex watersheds with varying soils, land use and management conditions over long periods of time. It was designed to predict the impact of proposed or alternative land management practices on water, sediment and agricultural chemical yields within complex watersheds of varying soils, land use and management conditions over extended periods of time. The model operates on a daily time step, it is process based, computationally efficient, and capable of continuous simulation over long time periods. SWAT has the capability of incorporating a number of differing physical processes major model components in water shed modelling, these include;.

Simulation of stream flow, prediction of the hydrological behavior of watersheds and understanding of various components of the hydrological cycle is important in order to plan for protection of water resources. On the other hand, lack of proper estimation of runoff in the watersheds, may cause serious problems in the optimum management of water resources and particularly the utilization of dams and water transfer systems. The main objectives of present study were application and test the performance of Soil and Water Assessment Tool SWAT as a simulator of monthly stream flow in the Ghareh Su watershed with an area of km 2.

Calibration of model parameters is a process used to set the parameters values with which the model produces the lowest deviation relative to relevant observed values. Calibration procedure includes identification of acceptable parameter ranges, sensitivity analysis related to parameter change i. The final step of the calibration procedure is performed automatically by the means of a computer.

Tons river basin has a great significance to states Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh in India, concerning water resources aspects and the ecological balances. A hydrological modeling approach was used to identify the sensitive hydrological parameters of the basin through Sequential Uncertainty Fitting SUFI-2 technique. The percentage of observation covered by the 95PPU p-factor and the average thickness of the 95PPU band divided by the standard deviation of the measured data r-factor , were taken into an account for performance evaluation of model. In calibration and validation the p-factor and the r-factor was obtained as 0.
