Fundamentals of Prestressed Concrete Bridge

Prestressed concrete is a form of concrete used in construction. It is substantially "prestressed" compressed during production, in a manner that strengthens it against tensile forces which will exist when in service. This compression is produced by the tensioning of high-strength "tendons" located within or adjacent to the concrete and is done to improve the performance of the concrete in service. Prestressed concrete is used in a wide range of building and civil structures where its improved performance can allow for longer spans , reduced structural thicknesses, and material savings compared with simple reinforced concrete. Typical applications include high-rise buildings , residential slabs, foundation systems , bridge and dam structures, silos and tanks , industrial pavements and nuclear containment structures. First used in the late-nineteenth century, [1] prestressed concrete has developed beyond pre-tensioning to include post-tensioning , which occurs after the concrete is cast. Tensioning systems may be classed as either monostrand , where each tendon's strand or wire is stressed individually, or multi-strand , where all strands or wires in a tendon are stressed simultaneously.

Prestressed concrete decks are commonly used for bridges with spans between 25m and m and provide economic, durable and aesthetic solutions in most situations where bridges are needed. In the field of bridge engineering, the introduction of prestressed concrete has aided the construction of long-span concrete bridges. These often comprise precast units, lifted into position and then tensioned against the units already in place, the process being continued until the span is complete. For smaller bridges, the use of simply supported precast prestressed concrete beams has proved an economical form of construction. The introduction of ranges of standard beam section has simplified the design and construction of these bridges. Post-tensioning is a method of prestressing in which the tendon is tensioned after the concrete has reached a suitable strength. The tendons are anchored against the hardened concrete immediately after prestressing.

This paper presents experimental and analytical results of four scaled prestressed concrete box-girder bridges with corrugated steel webs. The location of prestressing strands at both ends of the specimens and the thickness of end diaphragms are the two major parameters. Based on the experimental results of all four specimens, their seismic behavior is critically examined, including hysteretic loops, ductility factor, dissipated energy, and failure mode, etc. It was found that both the thickness of end diaphragms and the location of prestressing strands at both ends of the specimens are insignificant when the specimens failed at the mid-span due to concrete crushing, and the proposed analytical model can be used to predict the load-displacement relationship of such bridges. Concrete has been in use as a primary building material since Roman times. As it is strong in compression but weak in tension, it was used in arches, vaults and walls where it is stressed principally in compression. In the mid-nineteenth century, it was discovered that iron and later steel bars could be embedded in the concrete, effectively giving it tensile strength. This allowed it to be used in beams and slabs, where it worked in bending.
