Causes, impacts and coping strategies of floods in Ghana: a systematic review

A flood is an overflow of water that submerges land that is usually dry. Floods are an area of study of the discipline hydrology and are of significant concern in agriculture , civil engineering and public health. Human changes to the environment often increase the intensity and frequency of flooding, for example land use changes such as deforestation and removal of wetlands , changes in waterway course such as with levees , and larger environmental issues such as climate change and sea level rise. Flooding may occur as an overflow of water from water bodies, such as a river , lake , or ocean, in which the water overtops or breaks levees , resulting in some of that water escaping its usual boundaries, [2] or it may occur due to an accumulation of rainwater on saturated ground in an areal flood. While the size of a lake or other body of water will vary with seasonal changes in precipitation and snow melt, these changes in size are unlikely to be considered significant unless they flood property or drown domestic animals. Floods can also occur in rivers when the flow rate exceeds the capacity of the river channel , particularly at bends or meanders in the waterway. Floods often cause damage to homes and businesses if they are in the natural flood plains of rivers.

What are the consequences of floods?

Urban flooding has become a major problem in many parts of the world due to its social, economic and environmental impact. Drawing on a comprehensive literature review, combined with individual co-author in-depth experience in research and practice in Ghana, we searched academic database such as SCOPUS, Web of Science, Springer, Taylor and Francis, Science Direct and Google scholar for recent studies. One of the most threatening disasters confronting the world is flooding. It has destroyed developmental infrastructure and increased human casualties around the globe [ 1 ]. For example, 5 million people were displaced during the period — globally due to temperature and heavy rainfall.

Floods impact on both individuals and communities, and have social, economic, and environmental consequences. The consequences of floods, both negative and positive, vary greatly depending on the location and extent of flooding, and the vulnerability and value of the natural and constructed environments they affect. The consequences of floods, both negative and positive, vary greatly depending on their location, duration, depth and speed, as well as the vulnerability and value of the affected natural and constructed environments. Floods impact both individuals and communities, and have social, economic, and environmental consequences Table 1. As most people are well aware, the immediate impacts of flooding include loss of human life, damage to property, destruction of crops, loss of livestock, and deterioration of health conditions owing to waterborne diseases.

Flash floods are among the most severe natural hazards that cause disastrous environmental and human impacts. The city of Gabes Southern Tunisia is prone to harmful flooding, because of its location on a low plane and its extremely erratic rainfall distribution. Flood risk associated with this is expected to increase further in the coming years due to the high rate of urbanization and an ever growing population. A particular interest is given to a major flooding event, which is the single event that hit the region in the summer season over the last century. Statistical tools, satellite images treatment and analysis, meteorological observation data, Geographic Information System GIS , and survey data were considered in order to understand and explore the different causes of this disaster, its extent and its consequences. ERA5 is a new global reanalysis tool which was used in this study to evaluate spatial and temporal extent of the examined major rainfall event.

In an illustrative way it explains the different types of flooding and what dangers and negative impacts floods can cause on human beings and the environment.

Floods can happen almost anywhere. They can cover an area with just a few inches of water or they can bring enough water to cover the roof of a house.

Other methods include levees, dikes, dams, retention or detention basins. Communities preferred improvement of drainage structures with detention basins near the sites. Floods are caused by many factors: heavy precipitation, severe winds over water, unusual high tides, tsunamis, or failure of dams, levels, retention ponds, or other structures that contained the water.

Believe it or not, flooding is the deadliest type of severe weather. Use the buttons below to jump to the flood facts you care about the most, or read the entire Flooding guide to become an expert! Flood Facts. Worst Floods. Download a PDF version of the guide you can reference later.

Flooding 101

Introduction: Floods are the most common hazard to cause disasters and have led to extensive morbidity and mortality throughout the world. The impact of floods on the human community is related directly to the location and topography of the area, as well as human demographics and characteristics of the built environment. Objectives: The aim of this study is to identify the health impacts of disasters and the underlying causes of health impacts associated with floods.

Where does all of that rain come from?
