The use of smart technology in healthcare has been advancing steadily over the past several years, putting powerful devices like smart insulin pens, connected inhalers, asthma monitors and more in the hands of everyday consumers and allowing them to better manage and address their own health needs — as well as to quickly access help if something goes wrong. Wearable devices like biosensors and smart watches can also allow healthcare professionals to remotely monitor ongoing conditions and gather data, allowing observation and treatment that was previously only possible in an institutional setting to take place anywhere.

Nowadays, applications for the Internet of Things IoT have been introduced in different fields of medicine to provide more efficient medical services to the patients. A systematic mapping study was conducted to answer ten research questions with the purposes of identifying and classifying the present medical IoT technological features as well as recognizing the opportunities for future developments. The devices can be identified and controlled via a new Internet called IoT. This new Internet integrates physical and virtual world things to improve the quality of human life and provides better services [ 3 — 5 ]. Physical things, such as devices and tools, have abilities of sensing, actuating, and interconnecting while virtual things, such as multimedia content and software applications, can be stored, processed, and accessed [ 6 ]. Due to the prevalence of ICT Information and Communication Technology in healthcare industry, equal provision of healthcare services for patients has increased widely having enhanced the utilization of healthcare resources [ 5 ]. In healthcare, therefore, sensor and communication technologies, integrated by IoT, are attempting to enhance traditional communication with the patients to provide more efficient health services [ 9 ].

The aim of this paper is to identify some of the challenges that need to be addressed to accelerate the deployment and adoption of smart health technologies for ubiquitous healthcare access. The paper also explores how internet of things IoT and big data technologies can be combined with smart health to provide better healthcare solutions. The authors reviewed the literature to identify the challenges which have slowed down the deployment and adoption of smart health. The authors discussed how IoT and big data technologies can be integrated with smart health to address some of the challenges to improve health-care availability, access and costs. The results of this paper will help health-care designers, professionals and researchers design better health-care information systems.

With the NHS struggling under the dual pressures of a growing demand for its services and chronic underfunding, could the Internet of Things help make healthcare more efficient? By equipping objects with sensors to monitor their environment and an internet connection to communicate, the Internet of Things will give organisations greater ability to gather data and report back in real time. For the NHS, the IoT could present big benefits for patient care by enabling hospitals to track and monitor patients from the moment they arrived at hospital -- or even in the home before that -- with real-time data from sensors being automatically added to patient records without the need for nurses to take readings or update charts. At a more prosaic level, the IoT could allow the NHS to track expensive or vital or both equipment more effectively. The NHS, however, appears to be taking a more cautious approach. Smart devices installed around a person's home can be used to monitor their health and wellbeing to check if they're still doing well, and alert health professionals to step in when needed.
