The paper looks at his poems in the light of ecocentrism, especially the theories of Lawrence Buell and Ashton Nichols , who articulate ecocentrism as a word which expresses the interconnection between human and nonhuman in nature and environment. The word, ecocentrism, denotes nature and environment as the central and essential parts of the world to represent them as a web or system wherein all members and parts, including human and nonhuman, are related and connected to each other so closely that they cannot exist and live separately and lonely. By human, it refers to who is a creature in the web, who links to other creatures and entities so closely that he cannot be isolated from them. According to Blake, human and nonhuman have such a vital relationship so that no one can live without the others.
Songs of Innocence and of Experience is a collection of illustrated poems by William Blake. It appeared in two phases: a few first copies were printed and illuminated by Blake himself in ; five years later he bound these poems with a set of new poems in a volume titled Songs of Innocence and of Experience Shewing the Two Contrary States of the Human Soul. Blake was also a painter before the creation of Songs of Innocence and Experience and had painted such subjects as Oberon , Titania , and Puck dancing with fairies. Often, interpretations of this collection centre around a mythical dualism, where "Innocence" represents the "unfallen world" and "Experience" represents the "fallen world". This world sometimes impinges on childhood itself, and in any event becomes known through "experience", a state of being marked by the loss of childhood vitality, by fear and inhibition, by social and political corruption and by the manifold oppression of Church, State and the ruling classes.

Reading William Blake pp Cite as. These multiple formal and generic considerations are parallelled at the level of language itself by the surprising amount of wordplay in which the verbal texts of the Songs engage. Already in his general titles, for instance — Songs of Innocence, Songs of Experience and the combined Songs of Innocence and of Experience — Blake engages in some of the ambitiously meaningful wordplay that has too often been either seriously underestimated or missed entirely in assessments of his work. But I trust your earnest hopes may be granted. Finally he discreetly described items of scandal which had come to his ears. These he knew the Pope loved to hear most of all while pretending to be shocked and scandalized. Had he been hale and hearty he would have retained in his memory the names of women involved in doubtful intrigues in the hope of procuring them for his own pleasure at some future date. She would take her wonderful gold brushes and combs, her crystal per- fume bottles filled with rare and costly essences, and other things of a sentimental and personal nature. Unaware of the little wicket gate, Jamil had no one watching it. That would certainly reflect well on the Strabos, and upon you.
