Shadow mapping or shadowing projection is a process by which shadows are added to 3D computer graphics.
Whilst these all play an integral part, the most effective method of making your drawings appear three dimensional, is understanding how light logic works. The theory seems simple and the changes in technique small, but applying the principles of how tone, light and shade work, will improve the illusion of form in every drawing you do — regardless of the subject. Just by the nature of the lighting setup we have in our homes, it makes it really difficult to achieve a dramatic drawing successfully. To make something look three dimensional, you need the light to do the work for you — rather than your pencil. Sketching really helps you to keep your eye practiced and your creativity flowing and I do it every day.
In Maine especially, the sun always plays an important role in the perception of the day. Created by the same light, shades and shadows react differently, and both influence how one perceives space, color, and feeling. Where shadows appear to have a constant color cast, shade can have a lessening intensity as light is diminished. Creating motion in interior lighting is difficult, but these same principles are important to understanding its effect on the user as light can be bounced or grazed off surfaces. The main difference between artificial and natural light is the ability to control artificial light and direct it where you want. A south-facing window with a properly designed sunshade can not only block direct sun and therefore heat during the summer, but will admit direct sun and therefore heat during the winter. The added bonus is the slowly moving and ever-changing shadows that are cast on the exterior throughout the day.
It can take months or even years to fully comprehend the behavior of light and shadows. But with the right learning materials and dedicated practice you can improve rapidly. If I had to recommend one primary book for studying light and shadow it would be Light for Visual Artists. It comes with just over pages of great information about the different types of light and refractions of light. You get plenty of diagrams and real photos that show you how to analyze terminator lines, cast shadows, and reflected light. Light is a very complicated fundamental skill of art.
